Self-similar Traffic Generator


With the development of optical fiber communications, the network transmission capacity has been greatly improved, and a variety of types of network services has been developed. The network traffic distribution is long-rang-dependent and self-similar. It bursts without clear length, and shows the same characteristics of burst in different time scales. The traditional model based on the Poisson (continuous time) or Bernoulli (discrete time) process can not accurately describe the traffic with long-range dependence. In order to test, maintain and manage the network better, we need the self-similarity traffic generator whicn can simulate the real network traffic accurately.People carried out an active research on self-similarity, but mostly concentrated in the software simulation area, and few research on the dedicated hardware platform. In this paper, the design of our self-similar source consists of two parts, the logic operation and the parallel to serial conversion. The core algorithms are completed by FPGA, and the maximum transmission rate can achieve 2.5Gbps. Because of the application of the programmable logic device, we can achieve not only self-similar taffic, but also any other code stream by using Verilog HDL, so it can work in place of PPG at certain times. Our design is simple in structure, easy to operate, and flexible application.
